I use a lot of patterned paper to make my envelopes, so labels really are a necessity for me. I put the on the front because I have heard a lot of incidents like the one you describe - getting your mail delivered to you instead of the intended recipient. They actually cancelled the rear (with no stamp). When I got it back I covered the return and resent it.
