Not to bad (your mileage may vary). Vaccinated? YUP, and then some - 4 shots loaded.

We will NOT get into any debates on science here. The shots were always meant to keep you vertical and NOT in the hospital. So in that respect, mission accomplished. For the most part, I (started) with heavy fatigue and headaches. Progressing to really bad headaches/body aches, to feeling like I was swallowing razor blades and now down to a really lingering cough (all told in week 2.5 now) but getting better daily.

Sleep is my friend.

Is he writing again. Yup, catching up and have 2 out today alone. Wanted to make sure I'm not passing along the Vid. Thought you'd all appreciate that!

So what are we all reading lately. I mostly stick to chick-lit. Why, because I' a big girl that's why. Love the happy endings. Same reason I watch Rom-Coms.

Some suggestions of late:

Love Hypthesis by Ali Hazelwood

Very Sincerely yours by Kerry Winfrey (also check out Waiting for Tom Hanks)

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle - I laughed out loud with this one.

Party Crasher - Sophie Kinsella (couldn't get into this one - Rare for one of her books)

That's all for now folks..Till next round.

D

Derrickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14672623290156513181noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1032100671885679522.post-27049357486461043882022-01-13T16:01:00.005-08:002022-01-13T16:01:30.893-08:00Oh where hath though been??
Covid, Life and all that other stuff.

It's funny how things can go sideways and yet through the murk and mud, something good can come out of it.

Here's to a new chapter and renewed interest in getting to know some new folks.

Let's get this party started again. We meet again. So here we are 2 weeks post surgery. Sleep.. My dear companion. While I am forced to sleep on our reclining couch I have still been getting a full nights sleep with diminishing drug intake. (Side note: Percocet is EVIL - stuff makes me nauseous to say the least.)

Pain is diminishing, although at the surgical follow up today Doc told me 2 more weeks in the sling of shame and then off to rehab. So the rub of all of this comes down to, you're not in your 20's anymore, stop doing stupid shit that is going to hurt you because you are not going to bounce back from it anymore and you are going to be in pain for a very long time annoying the people around you for even longer making them want to put a pillow over your head while you sleep for sweet peace in their lives.. or something like that..

So now that I have actually been able to remain coherent for more than 2 hours at a time initially following the procedure, I have managed to actually get a few letters out. Been actually through some acrobatics, been able to hold a book and read some before dozing off in a pain killer induced coma (light).

Well folks - all I can handle at the moment - night night time. Ice packs here I come..

DerrickDerrickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14672623290156513181noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1032100671885679522.post-72897574070386078682017-05-05T22:21:00.002-07:002017-05-05T22:21:28.438-07:00When the lack of sleep finally catches you..Well it happened. Life finally caught up with me. I have been dealing with pain from many accidents over the years between motorcycles in my youth to cars in my not so youth. Most recently the little rear end job a few years ago that has lead to my in ability to sit for relatively long periods of time without headaches hitting me or just the simple act of sitting and typing or writing, which was a nice respit from daily activities and a nice outlet.

Over the last few months though I have had one of my old injuries that has reared its ugly little head and prevented me from getting a glimpse of a nights sleep. Shoulder injuries are not fun. They hinder life's simple movements and joys. Lifting an item more than chest height without pain - nope. Shooting a baseball game (photography), nope, driving, not for very long. You get the idea. So after a recent fall that finally threw me over the edge in Sept. and going through everything the docs tell you to do I could take it no more and went under the knife yet again.

That was Tuesday and typing this one handed is a new adventure (taking a bit). Responses to online readings or work email has a new look (think Almost Famous - I AM A GOLDEN GOD - I'M ON DRUGS!!) as this as well might be a run of in cohearent thoughts (forgive please).

Reading (ha) more of a head bobbing session within fits of consciousness. I do however have the company of both Martha and Skits as they lay over the top of me while I sleep acting as my living blankets (Chessiekets?). I just hope this does the trick, the pain meds go away and I can get back to doing the little things that make our lives here just a little better. Pain elimination should give me just a tad bit better mood in the house and make the 48 yr old fart a tad bit more bearable.

Anyone else in the parts falling off club? Pains that just wont go away and interfere with daily get alongs?

One of my girls have left, too soon are our furry friends with us. What was once 4 is now 3, the herd slowly dwindles.

This happened a few months ago and yet, the bed seems bigger without her there, more empty. Where did my backing buddy go, my winter heating pad. She made it a few months past her 11th birthday. In the end although a little slower, she was still excited to see me home, to make those walks, to fly into the car and be the expert traveler that her show career had gotten her to be.

She was another retiree from my friend Kathy whose dogs seem to find there way to the Dodson Chessie retirement home to live out their lives in style and comfort. I have joked with Kathy that if I get one more of her older dogs, that I am going to have a sign outside of the house "SandyOak Retirement Home for Wayward Chessies". If nothing else but for a nice conversation piece. My luck the county inspectors would be knocking on my door for permits.

Well, things around the house have slowly gotten back to what some would call steady (never use the words normal - whose to say what normal is). Leveling out maybe?

Books and Classical music:
What have I been missing? I have put away around 6 books in the past few weeks, opting for more print time over screen time, a break from having to stare at them for the bulk of my working day. Some nice selections from Apple Music for Classical Music for Reading have been a nice break as well. Not being distracted by words in the background has helped in calming down and enjoying the moment with the pages in my hands.

Reading list so far (recents)
Johnathan Unleashed
Dog Medicine (eye opener for my situation)
Chosen by a Horse (current read)
Bonk (roach)
Next up - Norse Mythology

Suggestions?

I am on the hunt for a school pen pal program for Kaylee's classroom.

Specifics:
Ages are from 8-10 years old. This is a public school
Grade: 4th
Location: Sacramento, Ca

In the interest of getting a younger generation to expand their hand writing skills and broaden their understanding of different people be it from within the US or destinations from around the world.

I put out this offer to her teacher this evening and have offered to completely fund the project as we all know how the school budgets are not a exactly inclined to spend monies on something that has nothing to do with Commin Core anymore.

So please let me know if any of you can help out.

Back soon,
I have not passed on the the great unknown, given up the ghost, shuffled off the mortal coil... I have been both very busy with work and unfortunately in a lot of pain from that little fender bender almost 3 years ago now (i.e. Lots of MRI/CT scans, spinal injections, shoulder injections etc.) with no slowing down in site.

Writing for me is very therapeutic. You have the chance to strike up conversations with folks you never met before and if all works out well keep those conversations going for years to come even with long pauses in between. Are those pauses intentional, (I'm gonna see how long I can put between these letters and see if they miss me) they can be misunderstood by the recipient, especially if you were fairly regular on the onset.

In our need it now society patience has been lost. When we don't get an immediate response from something sent, there can be a tendency to get upset with the person on the other end for their seemingly lack of interest or further intention to keep contacts/relationships going.

With that I would ask my regular pen-pals to be patient with me. I have not forgotten anyone, nor do I intend to quit writing. There are just some times when doing an activity that requires a neck position to accomplish an activity that honestly is very painful to complete. This post tonight is being done at almost 11pm on a reclining couch with a hot bean/rice/buckwheat bag behind my neck propping me up to get this down.

So with that, bear with my friends, I have not forgotten you, I have not abandoned my post (see what I did there :).

My little girls turns 9 this Saturday. She has gone through quite a bit in the past 2 years and I believe will be stronger for it. I have found someone I believe was just there waiting for me to find her and could not be happier. Our dogs have complete faith that we built an in ground pool just for them (they spend more time in it than we do).

Letters going out in the next few weeks as I can hold my head up for that long (work and family first folks). So with that, Night Ya'll.
Catching up slowly but surely. Little gift stuck in each one. I found these REALLY nice letterpress bookmarks from one of my suppliers. Hope the folks that have received them like and will use them.

Life has become a bit more stable, work projects have started winding down (3 studio control room rebuilds in the past 3 months). Kaylee has gotten into a good grove with school (3rd grade) as homework is a daily routine with daddy and what is expected nightly.

So with that, if you have sent me a letter and received no response. PLEASE let me know as life just got to me. I have missed sitting down at night and turning off the world and letting words and thought flow out onto a page and leave the house to be read by another.

Till next time
Had done an interview with Chris that was to be posted on the site. Things happened, as some of you have read. Subject so old now that the conversation would seem like a best of rather than an in depth conversation with a really nice guy that has a really interesting history with the family business. Maybe redo it if Chris is up to it as so many things have changed with his shop, new products etc.
With that, back later folks, slowly the ship turns..
Here in the Sacramento region, we have LOTS of them to choose from and almost on a daily basis you can find one within a relatively short distance from your home.

For our family thee are at least 4 large markets open over the week. The largest being the downtown Farmers Market open every Sunday under the freeway. Boasted as the largest Certified markets in the area - open year round.

If you are on your way to the coast to cool off, one of my favs is Sunset Magazines as well.

3. POINT REYES FARMERS MARKET, Point Reyes Station, CA
The scene:
Outside Toby's Feed Barn, it's all about straw hats, local gossip, and
live bluegrass. This low-key, all-organic market has only a handful of
booths, but in a teeny, never-too-touristy town, it's a prime example of
how quality trumps quantity.
The find: Look for a
simple white banner in back that says G.B.D. That stands for Golden,
Brown, Delicious: Osteria Stellina organic bread oozing with Cowgirl
Creamery cheese, a fried egg, and a fat, juicy tomato slice if you so
choose. Grab a hay bale and enjoy. Sat through Nov 5; pointreyesweekend.com

SO, where does this fit in with the stamps?? The USPS is putting out a set that I will be getting a few sheets for. The Summer Harvest collection
From their website:

Cursive makes sense with CursiveLogic

CursiveLogic
is different from other handwriting methods because, instead of relying
on rote memorization, CursiveLogic relies on the inherent structure of
the cursive alphabet. The CursiveLogic instruction method contains two key features:

Letters grouped by shape ― Four foundational shapes underlie the entire lowercase alphabet. Rather
than teaching the letters alphabetically, CursiveLogic groups the
lowercase alphabet into four groups based on the shape of the initial
stroke of the letters and teaches all of the similarly-shaped letters in
a single lesson. Letters are also taught in a specific order that
reinforces the pattern. By teaching all of the similar letters
together, CursiveLogic captures the natural synergy of the alphabet
itself, allowing each letter in the series to reinforce the proper
formation of all the others.

Letter strings ― CursiveLogic captures the flow of cursive by teaching all of the similarly shaped letters in a connected string rather than as individual
letters. CursiveLogic’s letter strings teach students to connect
letters from the first lesson, allowing students to internalize the flow
of cursive handwriting even before they have learned all 26 letters.

CursiveLogic also uses visual and auditory cues to reinforce the shape patterns:

Theme colors
— Each shape string has a color—orange ovals, lime loops, silver
swings, and mauve mounds—that reinforces the formation of the basic
common shape.

Verbal task analysis
— Students learn a simple, rhythmical chant that describes the path of
the writing instrument as the letter shapes are formed. The process of
verbally describing a motor task while performing it aids the
acquisition of new motor skills.

And
CurisiveLogic is fun! Students young and old love tracing and writing
our shape strings. CursiveLogic is the only handwriting curriculum that
has an “element of fun” that comes from the alphabet itself. No
cartoon characters, songs, or gimmicks needed!

From ME: I have ordered this as a backer on Kickstarter. I also received another copy in a early review that I submitted to Kaylee's second grade teacher. We have all come to the conclusion this is a great way to learn cursive handwriting.

There is much discussion lately on the importance of hand writting and cognition. There is a great TED talk from Jake Weidmann

We are all having a good time. Our families (hoping) are healthy, our kids can take off and play, they run around and get into trouble :)

This is going to be my gift to a little girl in Utah. My wish is for you folks to help me out.

I caught this story from Tamara Orr on Facebook.

You can read about it below and I have included the link to the story. The short of it is this.

A little girl named Addie wants a lifetime of Christmas cards THIS YEAR. Why?? Because she has been given less than a year to live.

So for 49 cents and a card/piece of paper, you can make a little girls wish come true.

Here is the link to the story

Here is the story:

In the quiet town of Fountain Green Utah, the local post office is the heart of the community.
And getting the mail from Box 162 is something that little Addie Fausett literally lives for.

At 6 years old, Addie is starting to count the Christmas cards sent specifically to her, which she can hang on the door.

There is a reason so many people are sending Addie a Christmas card.

“She kind of stopped growing when she was 3,” said Tami Fausett, Addie’s mother.
And slowly since then, the bubbly and energetic little girl who now weighs just 23 pounds continues to struggle.

“She likes to laugh and have a good time and hear stories, but lately
she has had a lot of days she will just cry all day long,” Tami Fausett
said.

And even with many visits to neurologists at Primary Children’s, Addie’s condition has gone undiagnosed.

“Cerebral atrophy is just a symptom of what is wrong, but she is still undiagnosed,” Tami Fausett said.

The deteriorating condition of her brain resulted last month in a devastating prognosis.
“They told us she probably won’t last much longer and they told us roughly a year,” Tami Fausett said.

Now, with the prospect that this will be Addie’s last Christmas, her
grandparents thought it would be nice for Addie to receive a lifetime of
Christmas cards this year.

“She doesn’t get to play with kids, so we thought if everyone would
send her a card, we could tell all her friends it would make her
Christmas a little bit better,” Tami Fausett said.

With the help of her older sisters, Shayley and Audree — who hang up
the cards — cards for Addie and her sisters are pouring in from family,
friends, and as word spreads on social media, even strangers.

“(We’re) hoping to get a lot so we can cover all the walls with them, for Addie,” Tami Fausett said.
Back at the post office, if this smile on the other side of Box 162
won’t warm your heart, Addie’s Christmas wish for us all certainly will.

“Merry Christmas!” Addie exclaimed.

If you would like to send Addie and her sisters a card, you can mail it to Addie Fausett Box 162, Fountain Green, UT 84632.Derrickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14672623290156513181noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1032100671885679522.post-33130375523877351162014-11-07T08:42:00.001-08:002014-11-07T08:42:32.127-08:00It's FPD!!
I'm still here. Kind of.

There are moments in life that are, well, life altering. One of those happened to me in late August this year. For me, and the family a personal tragedy. Life will never be the same because of the actions of one person.

I have written to a few of you as a vent and appreciate the welcoming ear and understanding you have provided. There are some I desperately want to write to and explain but feel I might upset or anger them and don't know how to handle the situation.

Basically this is what happened in a nutshell and why I've been a bit absent from the scene as it were.

Drunk driving (not me - I DO NOT DRINK). It involved a hit and run and an attempt at picking up Kaylee at school in that state.

There are many things I can tolerate from others Alcoholism and involvement of Kaylee is NOT one of them. To boot, this person went drinking and driving on the day of their court date. Again drinking to the point of blackout and cannot remember doing it.

To those of you who know me through my words and to those of you who may be reading my words for the very first time. PLEASE.. don't drink and drive. Don't drink around children. If you need help get it. Talk to SOMEONE! Anyone! If someone says you need help, GET IT! You may be in denial but the people around see the things you don't and what you do to those around you.

If you're depressed, GET HELP! If you are unhappy, find out what it is and fix it. Remember that when someone asks if you want to talk about it, they obviously see there is a problem even when you think you are hiding it. We see it. We can't help you if you don't want the help. Eventually these things will catch up to you and destroy all of what you have built and cherished around you.

If you receive a letter from me and I happen to bring any of this up. Please remember that I mean no disrespect to you and am just looking for a vent/sympathetic ear and is appreciated more than you know.

Thanks for reading. Not gone. Just slowing up a bit for life's adjustments..

This year the Dodson household has decided to up our game a little bit and dive into the fray with a bit of a bonus for a few kids we know as well as some school teacher that could use a little help in the supply dept.

Here is request to all of my readers and to other writing blogs. DONATE to your local elementary school!

I found excellent deals at our local Staples that I could not find anywhere else. We have decided to outfit 1 classroom with 30 students.

Here was the shopping list we went a little bit overboard with, but will give you an idea of how cheap you can do this for.

ALL items can be purchased up to 30 packs of each item before the prices go up. Want to save ANOTHER 25% buy a cheap backpack. This worked well for us as we setup 2 kids with backpacks as well and knocked even more off the final tab.

Glue sticks - 4 pack - $1.25 8 packs = $10
Crayola Crayons 24 - $0.50 30 packs = $15
Pencils - 12/pk $0.68 10 packs = $6.80 (4 pencils per student)
Comp notebooks (wide ruled) $0.50
Crayola markers
wood rulers $0.25

Binder paper (120 sheets-wide ruled) $0.82
One subject notebooks - $0.17

Now I don't know about you folks, but I have stock piled up on a lot of this stuff just for Kaylee to have on hand for the year. Great for summer tear through art/drawing projects (she has burned through 2 notebooks since last week). For a notebook costing us 17 cents - GO FOR IT.

Here is the link to the "less list" STAPLES CHEAP SCHOOL SUPPLIES

So there you have it folks. Please support your teachers. Support your schools. Support the kids who's families don't have it as good off as you might have it now.

I our case I worked a concert at work that gave us some overtime dollars. We put it out for this project. Please pass this on. The student that has the basics to learn will thank you.
I was sent a pen from The Pen Chalet and asked to do a review.

First things first. The pen was sent to me free of charge and no monies changed hands. Now the person who sent me the pen (Ron) said he has perused my little hole in the internet a few times and wondered if I would have a go at the pen. Sure.. Who doesn't like playing with some new toys.

So with that here we go.

The packaging is inviting. This is a (retail) $48 pen currently priced at $24. For a $48 pen I expect a certain level of packaging care. I don't expect a "shove it in a box" $20 pen. The box is a faux leather (pleather??) spring hinge.

Guessing they use this for the pen/pencil sets as well as there are 3 placement spots.

On lifting the tray you will find the care instructions and a cartridge. This pen also used a "squeeze" type converter. Think inner tube with a metal bracket.

Still working on the photo thing..

The nib I found interesting. This is the first Japanese pen I have ever had and was warned from other that the nibs ran finer than other makers. They were right. And in a happy way for me. I like fine -> Extra fine nibs. What was sent to me was a "medium" nib, but to me this would have been a fine in a Kaweco.

My meager attempt at a writing sample. These are using the same ink. The Kaweco is using a cart and the Pilot is using the bottle version. Notice the line is almost identical.

I will say this. The Pilot flows REALLY NICE. No skip, hop or jump right out of the box. The weight of the pen is pretty close to my TWSBI pens with a cap posted though I don't really write with the cap on the TWSBI. The Pilot Knight feels nice in my hand and really comfy without the cap.

The pen build quality is something I would figure from Pilot. Although i have never used anything other than the ballpoints. Check out the spring on the cap. You can see the hinging and it is nice and tight. This thing is not going to fly out of your pocket.

In comparison to some of my regular use pens..

I would have no problem hauling this thing around along with my Retrakt from Karas.

Bottom line, would I buy this? Yup. For $24 bucks you can't go wrong. I would and will probably be ordering one from The Pen Chalet to throw in my laptop bag for an everyday carry. It's built like a tank. The cap has a great "Snap" to it. Won't worry about dent scratch and it's right in line with the Kaweco pricing with in my opinion a better nib with a converter included.

On a side note The Pen Chalet is doing an ink giveaway for some Sailor Jentle Ink.

So there ya have it folks. My first pen review. I am going to be doing a review on a few notebooks that were sent to me in the next few weeks and will be giving a few away. Stay tuned.

A few of you know I was involved in a fender bender last year when someone texting decided that was more important than stopping and tagged me in the rear at 35 mph. Her car didn't fair well. My truck was for the most part untouched as she caught my trailer hitch and scooped up under me. ME though not so good. This is some of the reason for the lack of both posting and sadly writing. I have been unable to sit and write for more than 10 min at a time before my neck pain becomes just unbearable.

Two weeks ago I received some injections in my neck. I figure 60% of the problem has been dealt with. Follow up with the doc tomorrow where we will figure out the other 40%.

The rest of this lack of writing comes down to WORK.. It is concert season and that is keeping me hopping. Being the IT manager, I get hauled in many directions. We just upgraded/replaced our aged automation system at work and now I am repurposing the old servers and workstations that made up the old system to good use throughout the building. This is making some people VERY happy.

This is giving me a chance to build a replacement server at home as well. Anyone else want to learn Server 2012 with me :)

So bear with folks.. I'm not going anywhere. Just a slight pause for life. Get some kinks worked out and get the wheels turning a bit more..

Thanks for the patience.

What is A Memory Between Us?

This postcard kit
contains two sets of postcards, each of which is composed of 12
postcards with diverse prompts and designs. One set is for you to fill
out and the other one is for your travel companion to do the same. The
postcards in the two sets have the same template but by recording and
capturing what each saw and felt separately, different content is
generated, creating a unique opportunity to share both people’s thoughts
and perspectives with each other.
In addition, using the
advantage of postcards, you can capture what you feel, see, eat, and
hear and send them via mail to friends or family. The prompts on each
postcard are evocative enough to stir the imagination, but leave plenty
of free space for your own interpretation.

If you have a chance - Check it out. There are 9 more funding days left!!
I really like the paper inside of them. The America the Beautiful run they did last year was one of my favorites for the paper quality and they brought it back for the Shelterwood edition.

The feel of the covers is what I expected. You are holding a piece of veneer in your hand. After the bonding with the kraft under layer they are nice and sturdy. With what I'm calling the "White Wash"
paint job on the front and the SMELL of the wood.. Yup I'm all good with this set.
Remember, EVERY book is unique. The "burling" and grain on each book is a one off. I have made sure I will not run out of these for a long time to come. Now I just have to keep Martha from chewing on these. Nothing like a retriever and wood to go after.
So how do I give some of these out.. I'm in a few swaps on Swap-Bot for the Un-Journaling swaps every month, so these will be used for those.

Hmmm... Going to have to thunk a bit on this one. Suggestions from the audience. You know how this usually goes, so you guys come up with some ideas.
